Economy
A flirtation with Cuban-style socialism in the '70s damaged the bauxite, sugar, and banana industries and drove away the tourists on which the country had depended. Successive goverments in the '80s had sought to repair the economy, but a devastating hurricane in 1988 was a further setback. Economic miser, poverty in the urban shanty towns, a high crime rate, a large foreign debt and 18% unemployment are the result. Public debt/person $1,600. Income/person is $1,080 (5% of USA).
